La troisième étape du Sibiu Tour 2024 s'est conclue par une victoire impressionnante de Jonathan Caicedo. Le coureur de l'équipe Petrolike a dominé l'arrivée au sommet de Bâlea Lac, après une étape exigeante de 207 kilomètres marquée par une longue ascension finale le long de la splendide route Transfăgărășan. Caicedo, grimpeur expérimenté de l'Équateur, a devancé deux jeunes talents émergents du WorldTour cette année : Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto Dstny) et Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe), arrivés respectivement avec un retard de 12 et 14 secondes.
Grâce à sa performance, Florian Lipowitz s'empare du maillot de leader au classement général. Le coureur allemand relègue Andreas Leknessund (Uno-X Mobility), désormais dixième à 33 secondes, à la deuxième place pour 20 secondes. George Bennett (Israel - Premier Tech) complète le podium, à 38 secondes du leader.

La journée a été animée par une échappée composée de Mark Stewart (Corratec-Vini Fantini), Jeroen Bloem, Jordy Bouts (TDT-Unibet), Sam Gademan (VolkerWessels), Nicolas Heinrich, Roger Kluge (Rad-Net Oßwald), Leo Doyle (XSpeed), Edgar Nieto (Victoria Sports) et Rowan Baker (Saint Piran), auxquels s'est joint Anton Lenneman (Bike Aid) plus tard. Ils ont creusé un écart de plus de 6 minutes avant que le peloton ne commence à réduire l'écart.
À mesure que les kilomètres s'égrainaient, le groupe de tête s'est réduit jusqu'à ce que seuls Kluge et Bouts soient en tête au début de la longue montée finale. À -12 kilomètres de l'arrivée, les attaques ont commencé parmi les favoris, avec Sergio Higuita (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe), David de la Cruz (Q36.5) et Jonathan Caicedo (Petrolike) prenant l'avantage sur leurs rivaux. George Bennett a réussi à rejoindre ce groupe de tête.
Malgré les tentatives de retour d'Andreas Leknessund (Uno-X) et de Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe), Caicedo a lancé une nouvelle attaque décisive. Sa puissance a maintenu l'écart alors que Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto Dstny) et Lipowitz se lançaient dans une poursuite. Caicedo a finalement franchi la ligne en vainqueur, devant Van Eetvelt et Lipowitz.
La victoire de Caicedo a non seulement marqué une journée mémorable pour lui et son équipe, mais a également consolidé la position de Lipowitz en tête du classement général avant la dernière étape, qui semble favorable à sa conservation du maillot.
