La cinquième étape donnait l’occasion aux sprinteurs de se retrouver pour une explication finale musclée du côté de Saint-Vulbas, pour un nouvel épisode de la saga des finisseurs. Et après la première victoire de Biniam Girmay à Turin, c’est une autre page d’histoire qui a été écrite avec la victoire de Mark Cavendish, devant Jasper Philipsen, considéré comme le maître actuel des dernières lignes droites. Seize ans après son premier succès à Châteauroux en 2008, le sprinteur britannique à inscrit son nom un peu partout en France et c’est dans le département de l’Ain qu’il signe son 35e succès, celui qui lui permet de dépasser Eddy Merckx au sommet du classement des collectionneurs d’étapes sur le Tour. En marge de cette victoire record, le sprinteur érythréen qui s’est classé 9e s’empare quant à lui du maillot vert. Le Maillot Jaune reste sur les épaules de Tadej Pogacar.
Un duo de Lyonnais à l’avant
Au départ de Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, 174 coureurs composent le peloton qui démarre l’étape à allure modérée, sans réel candidat à l’échappée dans un premier temps. Après quelques tergiversations, c’est finalement au kilomètre 25 que Clément Russo (Groupama-FDJ) sort du peloton, rejoint au kilomètre 31 par Matteo Vercher (TotalEnergies). Les deux natifs de Lyon ne rencontrent pas d’opposition pour prendre le large et obtiennent au km 40 un avantage maximal de 4’35’’. L’écart du duo est surveillé par des coureurs de Lidl-Trek et d’Alpecin-Deceuninck, qui mènent le peloton sans précipitation. La moyenne enregistrée après deux heures de course reste d’ailleurs de 39,2 km/h.
Pedersen et Girmay à égalité après le sprint intermédiaire
L’accélération du peloton est sensible à l’entrée dans les 100 derniers kilomètres, et observable au sommet de la côte du Cheval Blanc, où le chronomètre n’indique plus que 2’20’’ de retard sur le duo. Un peu plus loin au km 123,2, la bataille pour la 3e place du sprint intermédiaire d’Aoste aboutit à une égalité provisoire (94 points) entre Mads Pedersen et Biniam Girmay. Le peloton s’est alors rapproché à 1’05’’ du duo de tête, qui ne résiste pas au retour programmé : la jonction intervient dans la côte de Lhuis (km 141), où Jonas Abrahamsen s’autorise une petite sortie pour aller saisir l’unique point en jeu au sommet.
Philipsen incapable de contrer
Les équipes des sprinteurs se concentrent alors sur la mise en place de leurs trains. A 10 kilomètres de l’arrivée, les coéquipiers de Mark Cavendish chez Astana se montrent appliqués, tout comme ceux de dsm-Firmenich pour tenter de lancer Fabio Jakobsen. Sous la Flamme Rouge, les Alpecin-Deceuninck de Philpsen semblent mener la danse, avec les Uno-X d’Abrahamsen qui ouvre la route. Mais dans les 300 derniers mètres, le « Manx missile » place une accélération redoutable que Jasper Philipsen tente de suivre sans parvenir à la contrer. Cavendish s’impose nettement sur la ligne.
