Maxim Van Gils a remporté la première étape de la Vuelta a Andalucía, signant ainsi sa première victoire sous les couleurs de Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe. Le Belge s’empare également du maillot de leader.
Van Gils garde un bon souvenir de la Ruta del Sol, où il avait déjà brillé l'an dernier en remportant le contre-la-montre d'une édition écourtée en raison des manifestations agricoles. Cette année encore, il a frappé fort en s’imposant au sprint en côte après 160 kilomètres vallonnés, à proximité des grottes de Nerja.
« C’était une étape difficile et assez chaude. Tout le monde sentait la fatigue dans les jambes à la fin. Aucune équipe n’a vraiment pu contrôler la course. UAE avait plusieurs leaders et lançait des attaques, donc j’ai dû anticiper », a déclaré Van Gils à l’arrivée. « Je connais bien Tim (Wellens), nous avons couru ensemble, donc je savais que je pouvais le battre au sprint. C’est pourquoi il ne fallait pas le laisser partir. »
Dans le final, Van Gils a dû faire face à Wellens mais aussi à son coéquipier Pavel Sivakov. Le trio a franchi ensemble la dernière grosse ascension du jour. Malgré les attaques successives de ses rivaux et une erreur de trajectoire dans la descente, le Belge a tenu bon et s’est imposé.
« Ce que Maxim a accompli aujourd’hui est incroyable. C’était une journée rythmée, avec des montées, des descentes, des virages incessants. L’adrénaline était constante », a commenté le directeur sportif Bernhard Eisel. « L’équipe a très bien couru, y compris nos deux néo-pros Luke Tuckwell et Lennart Jasch. Nous n’étions pas les grands favoris aujourd’hui, mais nous savions que nous avions une chance. Et cela s’est transformé en victoire d’étape et en maillot de leader. Voyons ce que les prochains jours nous réservent. »
