Ethan Vernon a remporté la quatrième étape du Tour de Catalogne 2026 au terme d’un sprint en côte parfaitement maîtrisé. Le Britannique a devancé Dorian Godon et Tom Pidcock dans un sprint en groupe réduit, au terme d’une étape rendue nerveuse par le vent et une arrivée en faux-plat montant.
Initialement, l’étape devait se conclure par une arrivée au sommet, mais les organisateurs ont modifié le parcours en raison des fortes rafales de vent. Ce changement a favorisé les sprinteurs et les puncheurs, et le scénario d’une arrivée groupée s’est rapidement dessiné.
Une échappée composée notamment de Merhawi Kudus et Samuel Fernandez a animé la course, mais le peloton a toujours contrôlé l’écart. Les deux hommes ont été repris à 18 kilomètres de l’arrivée, confirmant l’arrivée au sprint.
Dans le final, plusieurs équipes de sprinteurs ont pris les choses en main, notamment INEOS Grenadiers pour Dorian Godon et Uno-X. L’arrivée en montée a provoqué une grande hésitation entre les trains de sprint, personne ne voulant lancer trop tôt.
Parfaitement placé dans le dernier kilomètre, Ethan Vernon a lancé son sprint au bon moment dans la partie montante et a résisté au retour de Dorian Godon, qui doit se contenter de la deuxième place. Tom Pidcock prend la troisième place et confirme son excellent début de Tour de Catalogne.
La bataille pour le général continue
Les sprints intermédiaires ont également joué un rôle important pour le classement général. Remco Evenepoel a pris des secondes de bonification lors d’un sprint intermédiaire, tandis que Tom Pidcock a également pris des bonifications plus tard dans l’étape. Jonas Vingegaard, lui, est resté en retrait et n’a pas disputé ces bonifications, préférant rester à l’abri et éviter les risques.
Le classement général reste donc très serré derrière le leader Dorian Godon, et la lutte entre Evenepoel, Vingegaard et Pidcock s’annonce intense pour la suite de la course.
