La Volta a Catalunya 2026 a débuté par une première étape animée autour de Sant Feliu de Guíxols, avec un final explosif qui a offert un sprint spectaculaire entre les favoris. Après une étape rythmée et un peloton fortement réduit à environ 60 coureurs dans le final sous l’impulsion notamment de l’UAE Team Emirates, la victoire s’est jouée dans la montée finale vers la ligne d’arrivée.
C’est Tom Pidcock qui a lancé le sprint de loin, mais le Britannique a été débordé dans les derniers mètres par Dorian Godon (INEOS Grenadiers) et Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe), qui se sont livrés un duel au coude à coude jusqu’à la ligne. Au terme d’un sprint très serré, c’est le champion de France Dorian Godon qui s’est imposé pour quelques centimètres devant le Belge.
Tom Pidcock complète le podium de l’étape devant Guillermo Thomas Silva et Simone Gualdi. Grâce à cette victoire, Dorian Godon devient le premier leader de la Volta a Catalunya 2026 avec 4 secondes d’avance sur Remco Evenepoel, 6 secondes sur Tom Pidcock et 10 secondes sur le reste des favoris.
La première échappée de cette édition était composée d’Unai Aznar, Hugo Aznar, Josh Burnett, Baptiste Veistroffer et Tyler Stites. Veistroffer est d’ailleurs devenu le premier leader du classement de la montagne. Les derniers rescapés de l’échappée ont été repris à une dizaine de kilomètres de l’arrivée après un gros travail des équipes INEOS, Lidl-Trek, Red Bull-BORA et UAE Team Emirates.
Cette première étape a déjà créé des écarts et offert une première hiérarchie entre les favoris du classement général sur un final piégeux et explosif.
